Here are a few quick reviews on books I read over the Christmas break.
In Five Years by Rebecca Serle
This book was an enjoyable overall. The blurb was a little bit deceiving because it made me think this was more of a romance story. But it was actually more about self discovery and a beautiful friendship between two women. I got teary eyed a few times! I liked that characters in this story were around my age. There was alot of conflict and resolutions between the characters that made their relationships interesting. The New York setting was fun and the frequent inclusion of foodie descriptions always made me hungry!
The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
Back when I was working at the university library, there was an English class that studied this book in their course. The class came to the library at one point to do research on slave narratives and it inspired me to finally read this book. I am not a non-fiction reader at all, but this one was short enough that I was able to get through it. It was an interesting read and I really appreciated the opportunity to learn about Frederick Douglass’s experience. His writing is both clear and evocative. Thinking about how it was first published in 1845, I can only imagine the effect it had on readers during that time. The Library of Congress has a digitized collection of his original papers online. Check them out!
