Mini Book Reviews: Heartless, Wicked Fox, Clap When You Land

Hello, friends!

I am so behind on sharing my book reviews! 🙈 To help me catch up, I decided to share quick mini reviews of books that I have finished recently. This post will focus on some YA fiction titles.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Rating: 2.5/5

This was the first Marissa Meyer book that I’ve read. I normally am not a huge fan of retellings but I just wanted to try at least one of Meyer’s books. The love interest’s character, Jest, was probably my favorite part of the book. A majority of the book was too slow paced for me. Readers who are bigger fans of the Alice in Wonderland might have a better experience. The book didn’t really take off until about 80% of the way. I don’t plan on continuing the series.

Wicked Fox by Kat Cho

Rating: 3/5

I enjoyed reading this one. At the time that I read this, I really wanted to find a good K-Drama to watch but didn’t really feel like reading subtitles, so this was a happy medium. The mix of traditional Korean folklore and modern day life in Seoul was interesting. I liked the main characters and loved seeing their relationship develop throughout the book.

Clap when you land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Rating: 4/5

I just love this author and her writing style. This is the second book of hers that I’ve read. I read With Fire on High and loved it. I have The Poet X in my TBR pile. One of my favorite things about this book is that it’s written in verse. It amazes me that Elizabeth Acevedo was able to include such complex characters and compelling themes into her story with poetry. I am always looking for books by Latinx authors with characters, so that was also plus for me. This book also covers the themes of grief, the loss of a parent, culture, and family relationships.
