Destiny is all! Thoughts on The Last Kingdom TV series

Hi, friends! I just finished binge watching season 3 and 4 of The Last Kingdom series on Netflix and I am really looking forward to season 5!

The first two seasons were okay and I actually don’t remember a whole lot of what happened. Thank God for recaps because I would be totally lost.. There is so much going on in the plot that it was really challenging for me to keep everything straight. It wasn’t until season 3 that I really started to like Uhtred’s character. Maybe because he spends so much of season 1 and 2 trying to rise up and find his place in Saxon England. By season 3, Uhtred finally earns some renown and respect among the Saxons. He has also built up his loyal crew that are willing to follow him to the end. Uhtred and his men are so much fun to watch because not only are they excellent warriors, they are also very funny. Alot of major things happen in season 3 and 4 that made the story really take off. I laughed, cried, and felt so many other emotions as I watched.

One thing that really bothered me was Uhtred’s accent. Early in the show it was good, but then it changed and was often distracting. I’m not sure if the change was intentional but it was definitely noticeable. I also struggled with some of the Saxon names, there are a couple of characters that have similar sounding names and it was hard to keep them straight. Aethelred. Aethelflaed. Aethelwold. Aethelhelm.

Overall, I enjoyed watching this show and am sad that I have to wait for season 5. I also read the first book of The Last Kingdom series by Bernard Cornwell, which this tv series is based on. It was really good! You can check out my review here. It’s probably one of the few book series that I have any interest in continuing but it’s just so long! Therea are 13 books total! Have you seen the tv series or read the book series? I’d love to hear what you thought about them. Share in the comments!

Update – April 2021

I’ve started watching the series again from the beginning and the experience overall is more entertaining. I don’t feel so lost on what is going on in each episode and it’s easier for me to keep the characters straight. It’s been enjoyable to revisit how the characters are first introduced in the story and how all the relationships change as the show progresses. This show is now on my list of shows that I can watch on repeat after a long day.
